Spied: 2014 Volkswagen Golf Estate

The new VW Golf is growing already – these are the first spy shots of the practical Estate version, scheduled to debut at March’s Geneva Motor Show.

As expected, the Estate will share its front-end styling with the hatchback. But beyond the B-pillar, the stretched roofline and vertical tailgate maximise the Golf’s footprint on the road.

The current Golf Estate is smaller than the equivalent Ford Focus and Vauxhall Astra, but if the spacious new MkVII hatch is anything to go by, the 1,495-litre loading space is likely to increase significantly. There will also be a larger opening and lower loading lip to improve access.

The Estate is based on the same MQB platform as the hatch. It’s wider than its predecessor, with a longer wheelbase, and will provide more space for rear passengers.

The range will comprise an entry-level S, mid-spec SE and flagship GT model, while equipment will include Bluetooth and a touchscreen as standard. Engines will range from an 84bhp 1.2-litre petrol through to a 148bhp 2.0-litre TDI.

The Estate is expected to start at a slightly lower price than the current model’s £18,460 when it arrives in showrooms late next year. For more details click here.
