Spied: 2014 Volkswagen Cross Up!

The Volkswagen Cross Up! first appeared in concept form at the 2011 Frankfurt auto show, and these new spy shots reveal a production version that looks very similar to the prototype. The Cross Up! is just one of many family members planned for the Up! lineup, which will include a variety of micro-cars aimed at city-dwellers.

Like the concept version, the five-door Cross Up! snapped in these photos is sporting a front clip that features a bumper with a large metallic bar and fog lights. The metallic accents carry over to the side-view mirror caps and rear bumper as well. The profile view reveals a taller roofline compared to the three-door Up! we tested a few months ago. Affixed on the black lower door moldings are badges that confirm this is indeed the cross up!, placed in the exact spot they appeared on the concept version. Powertrain choices should include the same 1.0-liter inline-three fitted in the Up! That engine is tuned to 74 hp and 70 lb-ft of torque in the hatchback model.
The Up! has already gone in sale in Europe, but Volkswagen has no plans to sell the pint-sized city car in the U.S. The automaker says the public has responded favorably to a number of Up! concepts including several Cross Up!-based variants that made an appearance at this year’s Geneva motor show. Other Up! concepts include the Buggy Up! and a high-performance GT Up!, while a natural gas-powered eco Up! and all-electric e-Up! are both confirmed for production and should go on sale in Europe sometime next year.
