Spied: 2014 Hyundai Genesis

Hyundai isn’t about to let its cousins over at Kia steal its thunder with the upcoming Quoris rear-drive flagship. With one generation under its belt, the next-generation 2014 Hyundai Genesis sedan is already well into the development phase. These spy shots show the next-generation Genesis being put through its paces, making an incognito appearance in continental Europe.

The 2014 Hyundai Genesis will ride on an updated version of the current Genesis’ platform. In an effort to make it more competitive with its American, Asian, and European rivals, Hyundai is rumored to have dropped several hundred pounds from the sedan, and spent much time working on a sportier, revised suspension. Though Hyundai’s 3.8-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter V-8 will likely carry over with the eight-speed automatic, our source tells us a 10-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive option will be offered soon after launch.
On the styling front, the 2014 Hyundai Genesis looks much edgier than before, thanks to Hyundai’s Storm Edge design language. The next-gen Genesis ditches the vertical bar that divided the grille slats on the previous model. The result looks somewhat like the signature grille used by Mercedes-Benz. Other exterior changes include full-LED headlights that bear a passing resemblance to the flagship Equus, complete with LED DRL piping. These spy shots also hint at some technology that could be used in the 2014 Genesis; active safety measures like auto braking could be included, as evidenced by the rearview mirror-mounted camera and the black plate on the grille that likely covers a radar system.

Other exterior changes hinted by this 2014 Hyundai Genesis tester include a sleeker, sexier roofline that’ll likely trade a bit of rear headroom in the name of style, and new, more svelte LED taillights.
The 2014 Hyundai Genesis was supposed to debut earlier this year, but it’s now more likely to drop early next year at the Detroit Auto Show.
