Sneak Peek: Hyundai HCD-14 Concept

With the 2013 Detroit auto show less than a week away, we now have a good idea of all the new metal that will be on display. Hyundai will be featuring the slick-looking HCD-14 concept, which it has teased today with this shadowy image and may preview the styling direction of the next-generation Hyundai Genesis sedan.

While speaking with Automobile Magazine last summer, Hyundai CEO John Krafcik hinted that we would see a concept vehicle previewing the brand’s next design evolution. Called Fluidic Precision, Krafcik said the language “would be a little less extroverted” than Hyundai’s previous designs.

While the HCD-14 teaser shows plenty of convex and concave surfacing, the look seems to be more restrained than the sometimes-jarring lines of Hyundai’s current range. The overall form is similar to that of the Audi A7, but it’s hard to tell if the Hyundai is a hatchback or will use a traditional trunk. No matter what, the glass area is almost identical to the A7′s, down to the kink in the C-pillar. A strong character line runs from head- to taillight just below the greenhouse, and swollen wheel arches are filled with what look to be large, split-five-spoke wheels.

It’s assumed that the HCD-14 previews the next-generation Hyundai Genesis, which is due in 2014. (The current Genesis went on sale in the U.S. in 2008.) Hyundai also promises that the concept will include “advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls and spirited driving dynamics.” Stay tuned for more information when the Hyundai HCD-14 Concept makes its debut on Monday, January 14.
