The Problem: The accessory puddle lights on certain Subaru Forester, Legacy, Outback, and Tribeca models may develop a short circuit when the light itself or the connector is exposed to an “electrolytic moisture source” such as road spray with salt on it. A short circuit of the puddle light system could generate heat that might melt the plastic, leading to smoke or a fire.
The Fix: For Subaru owners with the accessory puddle lights, dealerships will install an additional fused harness. The recall is set to begin in February; owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 633,842 Subarus.
